Test your drinking water with lab results.
Do you know if your water is safe to drink? The EPA regulates public water systems; it does not have the authority to regulate private drinking water wells. Getting a water test is the only way to know if your water is safe.
If the home has a private well it is important to make sure there are no issues. Especially if there is an old or shallow well, the levels should be tested. You should also get a test if there are young children or older adults living in the home or if someone is pregnant or nursing as they are generally more vulnerable to bacteria and pollutants.
Other contributors to needing a water test can be if you notice a difference in the water quality. Changes in taste, odor or color are indicators to keep an eye on.
The following will be sampled and sent to be tested by a lab:
Test results are usually available within a week of sampling.
The InterNACHI Association of Home Inspectors provides a great resource for learning more about private water wells. You can also check out what the CDC has to say here.
